Cancer Center offers care and support for those affected by cancer

The Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center, located at 1209 Brown St. in Washington, provides a variety of special programs and activities to help cancer patients, survivors as well as their primary caregivers deal with the emotional and physical challenges associated with having cancer. The Cancer Center's vision is to provide integrative therapies that complement traditional care at no cost to the participant. The programs are not limited to patients of the Marion L. Shepard Cancer Center; any survivor or caregiver is welcome!
Medicare Prescription Drug Insurance and tips to help patients pick a plan
The Cancer Center is holding a free class to help cancer patients choose the right prescription drug plan and locate financial help for which they may be eligible. This class is offered as part of the center's Knowledge Is Power educational series and is open to the general public. It will be held on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Education Room at the hospital. Dinner will be provided. Those who would like to attend should RSVP to 252-975-4308 before Sept. 21.
Healing Words Journaling for survivors and caregivers, presented by Rachel Mills
Thursdays'Sept. 23 and 30; Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon
The Cancer Center wants to help cancer patients and caregivers experience a newfound peace in learning how to journal about their or their loved one's cancer diagnosis. Healing Words Journaling is a six week complementary therapy program. Each participant will receive a journal. This group will meet at Brown Library in Washington. Refreshments will be served. Those who would like to attend should RSVP to 252-975-4308 before Sept. 21.
Caregiver Support Group
Thursday, Sept. 2 at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
The Cancer Center is inviting those who are taking care of someone they love who is fighting cancer to join others who are facing the same questions and challenges that they are experiencing in a Caregiver Support Group. The group is open to any adult caregiver, man or woman. Pre-registration is not required. The group will meet at the Cancer Center.
Conversations
Thursday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. and Thursday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
Conversations is a support group for people with any type of cancer to share and relate experiences. Pre-registration is not required. The group will meet at the Cancer Center.
Breast Cancer Support Group
Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m.
The Breast Cancer Support Group is a support system for breast cancer survivors and those who have been recently diagnosed and are undergoing treatment. This group meets in the Education Department at Beaufort County Medical Center. Pre-registration is not required.
Look Good...Feel Better, a program of the American Cancer Society
Monday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
Look Good�Feel Better is a hands-on group session for adult female cancer patients, currently in treatment, who are coping with the side effects of chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment. Those who would like to participate should call the Cancer Center at 252-975-4308. The program will be held at the Cancer Center.
Therapeutic Massage
The Cancer Center will provide one free therapeutic foot, hand or chair massage each week to any cancer patient, survivor or primary caregiver. Please call the Cancer Center at 252-975-4308 for an appointment.
Restorative Yoga and Meditation
Every Monday at 6 p.m., Lifestyles Medical Fitness Center in Washington holds a free yoga class for all cancer patients, survivors and primary caregivers. The class emphasizes relaxation for the body, mind and spirit. Registration is not required.
